Vehicle Registration - this feels like a scam
Why must I pay every year to show I am still the owner of my vehicle?

Think of it as road tax...essentially that's what it is...

assuming this is a serious question:
without vehicle registration the enforcement of laws regarding motorised transport and the administration of any form of driver insurance would essentially be impossible.
So pay up.

There are a few things that are different in the US to the UK. This is one of them. Feel free to complain about each difference as you notice it!

There isn’t a Prince Charles in the USA. I feel cheated. All that endless drivel........

Annual checks on:
Whether you have paid all your tickets
Whether your car has insurance
Whether you have a valid drivers license
Whether your car has passed safety / emission inspections.
When the congestion charge first went into effect in London, one of the thing they were shocked to discover was the number of faked license plates that were on cars. In the US you not only have to fake the metal plate but also the registration sticker that would go on it. Might be slightly harder (as they change colors so it seems every year or so)
