I guess that's why we indicate that it's not necessarily better here, just different.
I wonder how many people made it over and became a cubicle monkey, just surviving financially, with much less vacation time than in the UK.

It's only relevant if they haven't sacked you.
If you've been sacked, it's going to cost you time and money which you probably won't be in a position to do for wrongful dismissal and to get that FMLA leave.

Same way the lawyers who sue for car accidents, etc.
I've only had to be involved in a civil case once, but had to sue a previous employer, but the lawyer took the case with no money out of my pocket, we won and she took 33% as her payment.

Thanks for all of the replies everyone! I was wondering what it is like in the Banking industry. I know that that is an industry that doesn't allow much annual leave, even by US standards, but I was just wondering?

At present, I get 20 vacation days, 12 sick/personal, 10 holidays.
Usually carry over 5 to 9 days a year in vacation

Our son works at a local bank in Texas. When he started he got 10 days/year + public holidays, and after 5 years he moved up to 15 days.
Our daughter works as a software engineer for a big internet gaming company in Santa Monica, CA and she gets as much time off as she wants, even though she only started there 8 months ago.
My company started people with a degree on 15 days, rising to 20 days after 10 years. No degree it was 10 days, rising to 15 days after 5 years.
I now work for Sweet FA and have 365 days a year vacation

Presumably the limitless vacation is unpaid? I've heard of a few Silicon Valley companies offering that option, always wondered how exactly it worked.

If you're on the retail side, teller will be shit, manager will be less shit.
If you're on corporate side it'll probably be better.

The customer service and help desk staff have fixed times and shift rotas but the developers, engineers, designers etc work whatever suits them best.

The previous internet gaming company she worked for did not have this vacation policy, so it is certainly not an industry standard

No, fully paid, apparently as long as she makes her targets then all is well. When we visited her in December she took us on a tour of their offices, which is their world HQ housing 800 employees. All very different to the office environment I used to work in. The working hours are also extremely flexible, with a lot of folks arriving at 11am and working until 8pm or later to beat the traffic.
Still, the holiday policy is a good one if you're actually able to use it when you want and not barred during the various show/expo's and other milestone deliverables.
But if they're who I think they are, they can afford to do it...plus they tend to shit can people in all their other offices when they hit gold rather than at home so it's a safe bet
