We eat out once a week, I've cut back on the programme package with Directv (i.e no more 5 knuckle shuffle channels).
I time my son in the bath tub with the water running (that is not a joke).
No-one is home during the day we are all at work or school, so no-one is playing with thermostats.
We have had a mild winter here in Dallas, the warmest for a long time, BUT still they hike the utility bills like its going out of fashion...there has to be a limit otherwise my gas bill will be higher than my mortgage.

I only just found out we had a new meter installed for the electric
a few month back .. and now to read it they just drive past in a van
with a gadget inside that send a signal to my meter which is returned with its reading .. bleedin amazing... the van can read 10000 meters a day instead of a meter reader doing 400... I will be checking it though ..

I think your house must be leaking like a seive, Yosser. We live in Oklahoma, in a house approx. the same size as yours and our last gas bill (up to mid December) was $132 - that was nearly triple the previous one, however. It's just the two of us here, so our bill bound to be a bit less than yours, but $500 seems ridiculously high!
We turn off the furnace at night. We have a gas fire the "log" kind in the living area fireplace , which we leave on a thermostat all night (properly shielded), with the celing fan on "slow" to gently circulate warmth - our house is open plan. It works very well, and seems to be economical.
