Have you or a member of your household been fiddling about with your thermostat? That's probably the reason for the huge leap, especially in a house that's 1800 sq ft...

The thing is, I'm a tight wad plain and simple right!

We eat out once a week, I've cut back on the programme package with Directv (i.e no more 5 knuckle shuffle channels).

I time my son in the bath tub with the water running (that is not a joke).

No-one is home during the day we are all at work or school, so no-one is playing with thermostats.

We have had a mild winter here in Dallas, the warmest for a long time, BUT still they hike the utility bills like its going out of fashion...there has to be a limit otherwise my gas bill will be higher than my mortgage.

Have you checked that your house has good insulation? Round windows, doors, the roof, etc?

Start reading the meter every couple of days yourself ..

I only just found out we had a new meter installed for the electric
a few month back .. and now to read it they just drive past in a van
with a gadget inside that send a signal to my meter which is returned with its reading .. bleedin amazing... the van can read 10000 meters a day instead of a meter reader doing 400... I will be checking it though ..

Was a beautiful weekend. Infact not been too shabby all winter overall so far. Only had to wear a jumper for maybe 4 days since early December.......soon be time to break out the horsehair IWB holster when it warms up a little.

I think your house must be leaking like a seive, Yosser. We live in Oklahoma, in a house approx. the same size as yours and our last gas bill (up to mid December) was $132 - that was nearly triple the previous one, however. It's just the two of us here, so our bill bound to be a bit less than yours, but $500 seems ridiculously high!

We turn off the furnace at night. We have a gas fire the "log" kind in the living area fireplace , which we leave on a thermostat all night (properly shielded), with the celing fan on "slow" to gently circulate warmth - our house is open plan. It works very well, and seems to be economical.
