Utility Billing Cycle
 
We're in a water district where we get a certain water allowance for a fixed price on a monthly basis.

Go over that allowance then you enter into a tier system where it becomes more expensive the more you use.

I'm pretty pissed this month because the billing cycle on the bill is 36 days and therefore shows a larger volume than normal and therefore costs more. ie. it's not pro-rated.

I asked about variable billing cycles before and they said they are unable to guarantee readings on specific days. I challenged them to pro rate the bills because of this and they said the don't have the capability to do this.

I feel this overcharging because of their issues must be of dubious legality however I have no idea how to take this further. If there's an official body or something.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Is the water provider a private company or government entity? If it's a private company providing the service you can file a complaint with the state utility commission, but they don't deal with government agencies providing such services however.


Seems dubious to have variable billing periods and then charge more because they increased the billing period because of their issues. I only have electric utility wise, but the billing cycle never changes, it's always 28 days.

Private. Yes, State Utility Commission...I'll look into that.

And yes dubious I believe and that's exactly what they do.

Update: According to the Public Utility Commission the bill must be pro rated if over 33 days. This should be fun.

Oh and I noticed on the water district website,
"severing our customers since 1971"

Oops someone made a typo, wonder how long their website has said that?

Good luck dealing with them, they probably know the rules, and just don't want to upgrade or fix their system to do it, so they play dumb.
