I really can not imagine this is serious, you are absolutely bombarded with adverts for Travel Insurance in the UK. It seems every other advert in the Tube is for it, never mind newspapers etc etc.
Not something I see in the US as an aside.
I do like the idea of ringing 999.

you are possibly confusing the E111 scheme - which allows a uk resident to get reciprocal treatment at any other European country. This scheme does not extend to the USA.
And don't try it in Switzerland either which only has private health insurance!

But Brits and Europeans come here daily so they must be able to use it for medical emergencies or a doctor visit. My friend who is European said you can use it here but you have to fill out some form. Otherwise thousands of people visit who have no coverage so there has to be some way.

Perhaps you'd expand on your thoughts? It is the fault of the US that it does not belong to the UK's NHS? Is there another foreign country where you can use the state insurance while abroad (the EU doesn't count since it's all one 'country' anyway).

Re: Using NHS in America
NHS is not State Insurance.
If it was it would be more reasonable that it would be covered, or that you could buy an extension.
I think there are Countries with State mandated covers that would or could include travel.

I object...I didn't vote for the UK to enter the EU and will never consider myself European.
