Another Skype user here, I pay $8.99/month for unlimited calls to European landlines.

It all depends on how much you call the UK. I use Yak. it doesn't involve any extra charges and I can call direct (no predialing No.) I have it on both my land line and cell. Calls to USA/canada are 3.5c and calls to the UK 5c. On average I spend less than $10/month.
Don't like Skype, poor audio and can be unreliable.

I use two tin cans and a piece of string. I get very favourable rates.
