USA honeymoon destinations

Hi,
I'm looking for some advice as to where would be suitable for a quiet, relaxing honeymoon with a young baby (under 6 months) in a part of the USA which isn't too commercialised or hot.(i.e Florida)

Ideally I'm looking to rent a cabin or similar, and have good links to forests, the countryside and generally good walking areas and routes.Lakes would be nice too for boat trips.
The time of year would be around the fall, late September.

Any (sensible!)ideas in light of the above would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Wow think you're probably going to be spoilt for choice. Umm off the top of my head,
The Poconos, PA
Erie, PA,
Anywhere in New England, especially if you like hill/mountain walking, but maybe be pretty busy in the fall.
Finger lakes, in upstate NY.
Oregan or Washington State, don't not specific places, but sure someone else maybe able to.

they have an under six month old baby tagging along

New England and Upstate NY are beautiful at that time of the year. The colors are beginning to come in on the trees and the apple picking will be in full swing. Also, schools and colleges will be back so any of the tourist spots shouldn't be too busy during the week. If you go to somewhere like the Finger Lakes in NYstate and have a car, you could take a drive upto Niagara Falls for a couple of days. Very commercialized but still worth a visit. You could pop across to Canada :)

I went to a family reunion in "land of the Lakes" or "Land between the Lakes" in Kentucky once, and it fits your description. I think the cabin resort we were at was run by the State Park system, so very reasonable. It was a very family-oriented place with a big communal dining area (pay as you go). They may have had some self-catered cabins too. Septmeber should be nice there too, not too hot but probably warm.

Are you looking for inexpensive, or no-limits? If inexpensive, many states (such as TN) have great state park cabins at very reasonable prices.

Sounds like the Finger Lakes region in upstate New York might be what you're looking for:

I haven't been to Asheville, NC myself (yet. Going next month for the first time) but Asheville in the fall would probably fulfill your requirements.

The town is a laid back place and is within an easy drive of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smoky Mountains. There are lakes nearby, e.g. Lake Lure (where parts of Dirty Dancing were filmed).

The weather is not too hot either and the scenery in the fall should be spectacular.

Here's some links about Asheville-

and not forgetting the Biltmore Estate

and also the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Not a bad time of year to come to Maine, it's still warm, but without being to hot and humid, tourists are slowly leaving...but places are still open.

Nice along the coast, if you like antiques, boating, and nice gentle hikes, scary as it is, this area is nice, the Penobscot bay area...all up around the coastal route 1A from Portland up through Rockland, Camden, up to Bar Harbor and South East Harbor, very nice area, fantastic national parks, whale watches, boat trips...great seafood too if you like that kind of thing...and also that time of year, it is pretty cheap, well more so in Sept.

There are loads of cabins, B&B's, and also loads of places to eat for all budgets....if you like lakes, definately a good area, out in Lincolnville/Camden....if you've a bit more money, the whole Sebago/Casco/Norway area is nice, which is about an hour from Portland...which is also a great city, only real one in Maine tbh, and there's Freeport for cracking deals for shopping, especially the baby LL Bean store, which you'll love if you need quality/cheap kids clothing, especially winter clothing.

Gotta be The Adirondack National Park, Upstate New York. Largest National Park in the USA and stretches from near Niagara falls east to the Champlain Valley. 6 million acres, I don't think you'll see it all in a week or 2.
Endless Lakes , mountains, fishing and hiking.
Google it.
I'll even consider giving you a tour for a day or two......at a very modest price.

I can personally recommend the Poconos in Pa, my wife and I went there for our honeymoon at the beginning of last october. Beautiful place, lots to do (fishing, walking, canoeing, etc.) the weather was good, lots of sun, not too hot and as said at that time of year all the leaves turning etc. Also it is only about 1 1/2 to 2 hours away from New York City so you can always go there for a day or two as well! Both my wife and i fell in love with the place and are planning to move there when we can!

NF used to be a traditional getaway for American couples but it's very grim these days. Skip it, or go across immediately to Niagara-on-the-Lake in Canada which is far nicer.

Depends on what the OP wants... beach? mountains? forest? lake?

Many thanks for the replies folks,I didn't get to see too much of the great country that is the USA when I lived there-I was too busy working!!

There are several destinations I'd not considered (or heard of) in the replies that are well worthy of consideration.
We also hadn't bargained on having a little one to consider-we had planned a beach type holiday but that's gone out of the window!

Thanks again,great stuff. :)

Someone mentioned Oregon. Lots of good places there. A few that come to mind are the Oregon coast - the mountains and forests descend right into the ocean, with sandy and/or rocky beaches, and there are plenty of places to get cabins. A real nice part is Newport-Lincoln City-Yachats-Florence.

Then there's the Mt.Hood-Govenment Camp-Hood River if you want to be up in the Cascades with good forest access, a couple of small lakes, cabins, short drive to the Columbia River (great for windsurfing), summer skiing, fairly fast access to Portland.

Or Bend-Sisters in the centre of the state for guaranteed sunny weather, great access to the mountains, forests, lakes, rivers, and desert. Not too far from some of the clearest lakes in the world - Waldo Lake and Crater Lake (the deepest in the US).

If you want to get a little further away, try Enterprise-Joseph up in the Wallowa mountains of NE Oregon. Quiet, but beautiful. Really good wilderness access. There are privately owned cabins in the wilderness up there that are grandfathered in and can be rented - might be hard to get the little one out there though.
