Default Usa (florida) car rental with "half" UK liicense

Some of you may have read (again!) the the DVLA (UK driving license authority) is withdrawing the paper counterpart part of the license

It's been a while since I rented a car in the USA but wondered how this news is going to filter through to the stateside rental companies.

I've never been asked for the counterpart of my license when renting a car in the US (and I go there typically 2 or 3 times a year) - so I doubt if its going to make any difference, or indeed whether most US car rental staff even know it exists.

Edit: Actually come to think of it - I don't even know where the counterpart of my license is. Probably fallen down the back of a set of drawers somewhere...

I rented different cars for ~3 months last year and never had to produce the paper counterpart either.

I was asked for it at O'Hare Airport back in 2008 - always taken it but never needed it in the USA since then. Forgetting it has prevented me from renting cars in the UK before so getting shot of it can only be a good thing.

Just out of curiosity, can someone explain to those of us who have been out of the UK for a while what the heck the "paper counterpart" of a UK driving license is?

Looks like an old green paper licence. It's primarily to show how many points you have on your licence. It's being scrapped in favour of an online checking system.

BritInParis explained what it is, this is why it exists...

Card licence, one step closer to national ID cards...

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I do recall being asked for my counterpart once - but it was over a decade ago and I can't recall if it was at LAX or MCO

As the law stood, technically a UK Photocard licence wasn't valid unless presented with the counterpart part i know for a long time I didn't know where it was. I think I only "found" it again when I renewed my license under the 10 year rule.

Thanks again

Dave
