Default US Visa Lottery?

Why Can't Citizens of the UK or Canada enter?
If rich countries like Ireland, Norway and Sweden can?

Just wondering...

The premise is that it's a diversity lottery (DV), to increase numbers from countries that traditionally do not have a high rate of immigration to the US via other routes.

Apparently, the U.K. has a high rate of immigration using more traditional routes.

Also apparently, this is not true of Ireland. I've heard it said that Ireland has benefitted largely through the lobbying of politicians with an Irish heritage (most notably Ted Kennedy) though I don't know how accurate that is.

I don't think wealth has anything to do with it. It's supposedly based on diversity ...

It's a mathematical formula

"Those born in any territory that has sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the previous five years are not eligible to receive a diversity visa. "

Thanks Penguinsix, in the unlikely event, in the next five years, the UK sent less than 50,000 immigrants, UK Citizens would be able to apply?

It's got nothing to do with citizenship! About 10% of British citizens are eligible.

Yes, the U.K. currently sends about 15000 immigrants to the US each year, if this dropped below 10000 then at some stage the UK would become eligible.

Got mine that way. The eligible countries vary year to year.

It's got nothing to to with residence.

What has it got to do with then?

The UK (england/scotland/wales/northern ireland) all use UK passports thus your nationality would be british. How do they differ between NI and the rest of the UK?
