Default US/UK camcorders

Does anyone know if camcorders are able to be used in both UK and USA?

I am shortly going to visit USA, and was considering buying a camcorder to record my visit.

I know from previous experience that USA video recorders work on NTSC format and UK videos work on the PAL system.

If I buy a camcorder in UK - would it work in USA?

If I buy a camcorder over there - would I be able to use it back in UK?

Any views or directions to sources of info would be appreciated.

If you buy a NTSC camera here and then want to use it back in Britain, you will need
to find a TV that takes the NTSC signal. Considering that most quality large tellies
in Europe (>28") are multistandard (PAL+NTSC), you should be OK. As far as I know,
Sony and Toshiba televisions work with NTSC signals. If you wanted to record what you
taped to a VCR, then that would be a different matter! There are a few that will take
NTSC signals - check with your local Dixons.

If you buy a PAL camera and record stuff here and want to play it back here, then you
might have problems. TVs here tend to be NTSC only and not multistandard. When I
emigrated to Canada, I had a load of PAL tapes with me that I was loathe to give up.
So I had to search for a multistandard VCR - an Aiwa. My PAL camcorder was more
hassle than it was worth and is lying in the back of a drawer somewhere!

As to power supplies - most camcorders work on 110-220V anyway. But it should be
something you should check.

Hope this helps

Sure but tapes recorded on it wont work in US video tape players

Depends

There a lot of recorders in the UK that will play NTSC tapes, of course your TV needs
to handle NTSC too but a lot of them do.

I think most video recorders are dual standard, now.

Some camcorders are able to play back in both, NTSC or PAL. My Hitachi does, and you
might want to look into one of those.

Most will PLAY NTSC but you cant record in that format without a special
multiformat recorder

I can play tapes send to me by a buddy in Chicago but he cant play tapes I send him.

If you have a PC you can upload your videos and play them back on a PC
