There is also a serious "roots" movement to give a child an "ethnic" name from one's heritage, so you start to see names that are Gaelic, or "olde English". Supposed to be more classy and "real."
I was one of an endless number of Amys in the US and my mother also swore that no one she knew was named Amy until AFTER she named me and saw another baby named Amy in the grocery store (we ended up in high school together). I was soooo relieved to learn that Amy is NOT a common name in the UK.
I know a few Gemmas here, but no Tamsins, for example (Tamsin is a variant on Thomasine!). A very few hip Siobhans. Devin/Devon is used as both a boy's name and a girl's name.

I had an [little] argument with my fiancee last week over baby names when I refused to call any of our children Caydance, Kateland, Brandon or Nicole (so chavvy).
