I grew up in London so had a very realistic view of terrorism. I was previously engaged to a US Navy pilot who was based at The Pentagon. It amazed me that he'd travel all round the city in uniform. I asked him about the security aspect at the time and he said it never crossed his mind. This was pre 9/11 but as far as I can tell, nothing's changed.

I was stationed at Keogh Barracks near Aldershot for a while in 1986. It was a training depot for us medics and we regularly had detachments of US marines over for training. We would all bugger off into Aldershot of a friday night - in our civvies - and watch as the yanks in full regalia went wandering around like it was WW2 and they'd come to save us and were promptly met by hoards of pissed up Guards from Pirbright Depot....not a pretty sight

Terrorist targets. There were incidents of IRA accosting military personel going on leave back on the 70's (a bit obvious 1 sqauddie sat on his tod in a train in full uniform), so the MOD banned all brit military personel from wearing uniform off duty and off camp. It still stands today I believe.
