So much effort seems to go in to getting together with friends it never ceases to amaze me. I don't recall it being this much drama in Europe, where people would just pitch up at each others houses or arrange to get together with little notice. Which brings me back to the different outlook on life.
Through hobbies, I have met another couple of people who I would keep in touch with if we moved away.
I wonder if its the constant moving around the country that a lot of people engage in for work that depersonalises everything, meaning most professional folks just end up with acquaintences rather than friends.

Never heard from the guy I went to lunch with for 6 years, gave up on him after 3 or 4 calls, he became suddenly 'too busy' every time I called him.

He is the only one despite many people from that company attending my 40th birthday party. I leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Does "what goes around, comes around" mean anything in these parts?

I will say this, though, having lived in the SF Bay Area (very affluent), Rural NY and now Southern suburbia, my experience is that the most genuine Americans are the ordinary blue-collar (AKA "working class" ) people who may be your next door neighbour or the bloke on the factory floor you chat to on your fag break away from the desk.
My Mrs makes friends quicker than I do, probably cuz she's a septic and "just clicks" in the way we tend to with each other. Well, maybe that's it.
