Just interested to know if my measly 15 days (compared to 30 in the UK) is par for the course here ? - I mean what you gonna do ? - two weeks in the summer and you're done

I think there may be less bank holidays as well

Bit hard to swallow isn't it? But you do get Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day plus at least a few others. Personally I now have 365 days/yr.

15 days is pretty good...

holdiay over here is utter pants...and even if you do have holiday time, made to feel guilty for actually using it...where the missus works, someone that actually used all his holiday time for a holiday was questioned about his work ethic towards the company....

To me it doesn't really matter how many days paid vacation one gets because:

if you have family (either in the US or elsewhere), there are occasions like Christmas, Easter, 4th July,Thanksgiving (choose your holiday as appropriate to your religion/culture) when you pretty much spend them with family who may be in other states.

This means you use will probably use a fair proportion of your vacation time for family events.

So, you're left with even fewer genuine vacation days.

Some employees may even have to deduct national holidays from their paid vacation which are also mandatory holidays (i.e. you have to take the day off) for that employer. So, one looses some more paid vacation days.

Yippee for me, the intra-company transferee.

I get my full UK allowance, 20 days; I pushed them for the Queen's birthday too but they were having none of it.

I have to say at our place people do take holiday but no-one ever takes a couple of weeks at once - I suppose with 15 days a year (they start on 10 !) why would you !
I should have took that job in Germany

I'm Intra-company as well - but I was only given the opoortunity to become as US employee which means I had to take US "benefits" - I'm beggining to struggle to see what they are !

I used to get 28 days in the UK. I now get 12! I can't believe it! We get 11 public holidays out of which Martin Luther Kings birthday and Easter Monday can be used as floating days which we can work and take at another time. Whooppeeeee 14 days vacation and 9 public holidays! But I work less hours and far less travelling. I am home most days at 5pm.

you just reminded of the benefit - home by 5 and hardly ever travel now - I'm in MN today and this is only my 3rd trip away in 9 months - used to do 40 weeks a year away

They tried that one on me too, but I demanded 20 days or I was going to jump on the first flight back home; luckily the bluff worked.

The Yanks live to work not the other way around like the rest of the world. You could always go for the unpaid vacation time - thats what I'm thinking of. Or become a teacher where you get loads of hols, or what I'm (hopefully) going to be doing eventually, working for yourself woo-hoo!

oh my god in the uk i presently get 7 weeks annual leave plus this year it goes up to eight having said that i work alot of them and get overtime pay because you dont really need 8 weeks a year
the us dont seem to believe in holidays then?!?
