It depends on the State you are going to. Here in North Carolina once you come into the State as a resident you have 60 days to get an NC license.

One way to get around this I have heard is to get an International Licence before you come, then you can drive for up to a year before you have to get your state licence.

Even though State driving laws may vary, I'm sure that it's pretty much consistent that if you are resident in a state, you have to have a driving license issued by the state you live in.

Please see below about the International Drivers License.

The excerpt is taken from http://www.svpvril.com/drilic.html

"(an international driving permit is not, alone, a sufficient substitute for a drivers license, and requires additionally a drivers license from that person's country or state of residence)..."

"{The international driving permit is issued under the authority of the UN Convention on International Road Traffic, and it serves as an authoritative multi-lingual translation and verification of the person's home drivers license, which means that it has no legal weight without that home drivers license (and, also, a driver's international permit has no weight inside the driver's home country). It is good for not more than 12 months (less in some countries) and the driver is still subject to all the traffic laws."

It's my understanding that International Drivers License is meant for visitors to a foreign country so if you have an US immigrant visa, you should get a US license once you move and live in the US.

Also forgot, we could not insure our vehicles until we had our Drivers Licence.
