US Claims to Fame
We drove up to Kansas this weekend to a festival. Stopping at various places on the way we noted the following:
Wichita KS= The Air Capital (because Boeing, Lear, Beech, Cessna based there for many years)
Abilene KS = The Greyhound Capital (because they breed 'em en masse)
Kansas generally = The Wheat Capital of the World (from the size of the wheat fields I'm not surprised)
The route we took had a claim to fame itself - roughly following the Chisholm Trail - where much of the legend of the American cowboy was born. The longhorn cattle drives from Texas to the railroads of Kansas were here!
Have your state/city or neighbouring places any similar claims to fame? - It would be interesting to hear of these things....and it might assist in educating us about our adopted homeland.

Gilbert, Arizona, supplied so much alfalfa for World War I cavalry horses that it became known as the "Hay Shipping Capital of the United States." Today it is the "Beige Home Subdivision Capital of the World."

My husband lived there at the time it was being filmed and well remembers he and a crowd of townsfolk standing on a bridge watching the filming of the scene where William Holden splashes his face in the Smoky Hill River - and the crowd watching all gasped " Eeeeeeuwwwww - I wouldn't do that if I were you!!"

If you have an iron constitution you can take on SXSW.... that is when we are SERIOUSLY the live music capital of the world. No sleep, no food, just drinking and watching gigs -- 1500 or so bands in four nights!

Fort Myers, FL
Winter home of Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Harvey Firestone.
You can still take a tour around the Ford and Edison homes and see the Botanical Garden planted by Edison whilst he tried to find a substitute for rubber so that America did not have to rely on imported rubber from Asia.
McGregor Boulevard has several miles of Royal Palms planted by or on the behalf of Thomas Edison. It's a very beautiful road, hence the nickname for FM - City of Palms.
