US born daughter obtaining British passport through father
Hi,
Apologies if this has already been addressed elsewhere. I'm a UK citizen living in the US (greencard) married to a USC and have a daughter born in the US. Here's my question - would my daughter be eligible for UK citizenship? I know in the case of my wife, she would have to live in the UK and go through the residency process. Many thanks. |
Re: US born daughter obtaining British passport through father
If you are a British citizen "otherwise than by descent" i.e. (in most cases) you were born in the UK, then your children will be British citizens by descent, they don't need to "claim" anything, they are British citizens from birth.

Re: US born daughter obtaining British passport through father
We followed the process detailed in the .gov link above, just to make life easier for my son if he ever wanted to go and live in the UK/get his British passport without having to locate all our documentation if we weren't around by that point. I haven't bothered getting him a UK passport yet as he has to travel in and out of the US on his US one anyway.
