Surely the issue is not whether the passport is 'as good as' a certificate, but whether it is useful to have both for any number of other reasons? By definition, you are going to carry a passport with you on various international adventures. Things get lost/stolen. I personally would not feel comfortable if my only proof of citizenship were on the road with me.
