Want to take my baby (6 months) from USA to Canada for weekend. Does she need a passport to re-enter the US, or is her birth certificate good enough? At what age would she need a passport? She's US citizen.

There may be other issues too but the possibility of parental abduction is a fear
even if you have proper identification for the child. Be careful about parental
permission. Are both parents going or just one? You may need a notarized note from
the other parent to cross the border with a child.

Ask the US Immigration service. Don't rely on any info that posted in here to be
authoritative.

Any official government identification proving US citizenships is fine. In practice
this would be either a passport, or a birth certificate with some other photo id. So
your baby needs to get a driver's license to go with the birth certificate. :)

If only one parent is going, you need some proof that you are not abducting the baby.

That's the rub - what sort of photo id can one get for a 6 month old? Both parents will be travelling with her, so that's not an issue. Seems a waste to get a passport when the picture will be useless within another 6 months!
The US immigration website doesn't offer much help.

That, and especially the second sentence, is the best advice on this subject that
could possibly be given to someone raising the original question.

children don't normally need picture IDs -- even to fly. that said -- newsgroup
opinion is worth what it costs -- if you are worried check with immigration

so birth certificate and two parents whose names match the certificate should work --
and notarized travel permission if it is only one of you with the baby

the last time I entered and exited Canada with my husband and daughter they didn't
ask for anyone's ID

Don't know why they would check with US immigration. They are going into Canada. So
if anybody they should check with Canadian immigration.

What are the parents' citizenship - as I see this is posted from britishexpats?

If different from the baby, it could be a problem crossing the borders without a
passport for the baby.

Yes, her birth certificate is ok. If both parents are not travelling together, then a
letter from the other parent indicating that he/she knows about the baby being taken
out of the US.

Officially, she doesn't need a passport under the current regulations, but it is the
best means of identification.

Reread the original post. The question was what documentation is needed to re-enter
the USA from Canada. Canadian immigration has no authority on this matter.
