A standard SUV? You said you had to wait 8 weeks for a customized car to accommodate your ~large~ family ... in particular a Pacifica. I just came from Route 9 in NJ and passed dozens of car lots and there are hundreds of SUV's in all those lots. Why wasn't one of those good enough for you? And why did you have to go through a relocator to purchase a car? You can do that once you landed here on your own without someone else acting as your agent.

Geez.

As for your second point - indeed, on reflection the person that verbally agreed to this seems to have been overruled - oh well, it'll sort.
you could have, and should have, gotten a Social Security Number. Your husband would have qualified for one.
To obtain a social security number, you are required by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to have either an offer of employment or a job from a company in the United States. You had the required paperwork, and the required job offer.

in fairness...I don;t think she said it was made to suit her family...she said the leasing agent had to order it, and therefore wait for it to be manufactured....although the lease agent is not very good if they do not have pre-arrangements for "out of stock" deliveries with dealers.

But the other point could be valid. Was not necessary to go through such an agent as long as one would qualify on a lease application with a manufacturers finance arm.

Though it doesn't take more than a couple days to get a number, just a while to actually get the card...unless you weren't in the SAVE system when you applied for the card.

As for quote, yes you can get one with out SSN, just ends up being more expensive, and you can't use those online quote places.

If that's the case, your in the tri-state area, doesn't take much to buy one out of state.

I have purchased many a new car in the UK and typically had to wait a few weeks so I wasn't shocked when told the same - that may not be typical here but you can only go on your own personal experiences.

The lease agent specialise in overseas relocations and enabled me to get the same lease rates as somebody with good credit history would here - that is why we used them.

No he wasn't in the system and they had to go back to immigration.

He tried a couple of places for quotes and was told couldn't do without the SSN but perhaps he was just unlucky in that.

Then my apologies to the OP but she did say that the vehicle had to be made and they needed more seats to accommodate her four daughters.

Never heard of anyone having a standard vehicle "made" unless it is customized in some manner. You buy from the lot and if it isn't on the lot, the dealer will look at other dealers for exactly or as close as possible for what you want. I know this because hubby bought a truck on Thursday and the one he wants with standard transmission is not available locally so it has to come up from the south. It will take 10 to 14 days to arrive. A heck of a lot less time than 8 weeks.

In fairness Bob, even if she bought in Pennsylvania or New York in order to register the vehicle in New Jersey in addition to the taxes they would need insurance and quite probably a NJ state license.

As for a SSN we all who immigrated know that you never apply for a SSN the day after you arrive. You wait for at least 10 days for your name to be entered into the USCIS database and transferred to the SSA database. If it is not there, then the SSA needs to have manual written confirmation of the person's eligibility for the SSN. That can take up to ten weeks.

I know all of that..I've been in the business for 28 years. That's why I was surprised that a leasing agent would not have agreements in place with dealers for immediate delivery. Even fleet companies have purchase agreements with manufacturers and dealers. If a leasing agent called us tomorrow, we'd have them what they wanted either immediately or within a few days.

just curious. because i don't know the answer..but..given her husband had a job, and therefore obviously the required work visa...this is what the SSN website says is required for obtaining an SSN.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, Social Security must see your current U.S. immigration documents. Acceptable documents from the Department of Homeland Security include your:

* Form I-551 (includes machine-readable immigrant visa with your unexpired foreign passport);
* I-94 with your unexpired foreign passport; or
* Work permit card (I-766 or I-688B).

would the OP's husband not have been in possession of those? Otherwise how would he have entered the country to work.

It's probably a timeline issue...they went and applied for the SSN straight off the bat instead of waited the 10 odd days it takes for them to get into the system, which meant they had to be manually verified....which takes time...

I-94's and H-1b's are easily forged as are I-551 stamps and even green cards. Can buy them for a few hundred dollars on most downtown corners in lower NYC.

Forged documents are one of the reasons why status must be verified by the USCIS and this is done by the database and/or manual written verification by the USCIS.

OK, to take this thread back to the point, it's time to put on your best negotiating hat and go back to the employer. Even if you were promised something, involving a lawyer will be career-limiting. So, explain your difficulty and seek a compromise - a reasonable % of your costs will keep you in the USA, and them with an employee for whom they've already invested a fair chunk.
