Written agreements are always best, but it doesn't mean you can't try without it.
Good Luck

Yes. I wonder why the OP's husband did not get written approval (even by email) to hire a car (with an approximation of how long the employer would pay for it).

It was verbally agreed, its a shame that people are not as honest as us!

If we agree to something we follow it through.

So...if for some reason you chose not to avail yourself of almost immediate delivery of a vehicle..and instead rent one for what amounts to the price of a good used car, I'd say that was a bad decision and hard to imagine an employer biting the bullet for it.

The 8 week wait was how long it took the leasing company to have it built and delivered and the leasing company is a specialised overseas transfer company who get leased cars at the price a US citizen would get at.

I am afraid your information is wrong as there is no way a British citizen can drive away in a car the same day without a driving license and insurance which as Ive already stated we required a social security number for. our only option was to hire a car on arrival in the US which the company told us to do.

Where did you get all this info from? A quick look at the NJ DMV website confirms that you don't need a SSN to get a drivers license, there are 23 other documents you could have used. You may not have had them the day you arrived but a few weeks would be enough time to get at least 1 which is all you need.

You need to be more savvy here. Don't believe what people tell you unless it is in writing and you have confirmed it yourself. Just because it comes from somebody you consider an expert or trustworthy, doesn't mean that it's true. Especially when money is involved.

I really don't want to get into an argument about this but a quick visit to http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/pdf/Licen...posterpint.pdf clearly shows at the top under requirements that you need a SSN, proof of address, at least one primary document, and at least one secondary document.

As for your second point - indeed, on reflection the person that verbally agreed to this seems to have been overruled - oh well, it'll sort.

you don't need insurance to buy a car, just to register it, in most states...and there's plenty of car lots around, someone would always be willing to flog you something....don't have to get a new car after all.

He's not, because you could have driven on your UK license for a length of time, because your not moving from another state, so that part of the dmv site is irrelevant...can use your UK license from anything from 30 days to 12 months depending on the state, getting insurance for 12 months would be tricky, but not for a few months it wouldn't.

30 days is how long you can drive for on uk license here, and no we could not get the SSN, we did try that. Also tried to get insurance quote for my car prior to its delivery and guess what? no SSN no quote.

You CAN NOT buy a new or used car without a New Jersey license, unless you are from another state.

You can get insurance without a US license, shop around. Plus a foreign license allows you to drive a car in the US. How do you think tourist do it? What about all the Brits here that never get US licenses so they can avoid traffic tickets?

As for having a special car built because you have 4 girls, why do you need a special car? What did you drive in the UK? Why wouldn't a standard SUV or Van do for you like its sufficient for other large families?

And why the heck didn't your husband think about talking with the company about renting a long term vehicle like that. Hell, I would have at least found a cheaper rental agency and/or asked the company for their suggestions before running up a bill for $8,500 plus gas, mileage, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I do hope you get partial reimbursement for your expenses, but I honestly think you gave no thought to being practical and economical in your car decisions.

If the company thought about it as I have, I would scruntize every little expense voucher your husband presents looking for discrepancies or abuse because any employee who is so cavalier about a company's money warrants looking closely at.
