What you should be asking is why some employers don’t provide insurance from day 1.

Did you really say that in all seriousness? My goodness, Americans really liked to be rolled over, and love to see others as well. Stand up for something better rather than defending the cr#p we are slopped up here.

Love that it is all called a benefit. My goodness we are in a pickle and some love it.

Hard to argue that it is not a perk, at least in the current insurance climate.

Totally different than waiving waiting periods for immigrants who are new hires.
How? If they're wanted enough for the employer to have hired them it's not different at all. Immigration status is irrelevant.

Yeah I accept that, even if I don't like it.

Also, people should negotiate and push harder here. Everything is possible with correct negotiating strategy. I found that even with USCIS! And I ripped them a new one!

Just updating on this- they are working on it. My boss's boss is on the case so hopefully they will resolve.

My fault for not checking I could get short term coverage sooner, didn't occur to me that it would be tricky.

Thanks for this- great idea if my company can't sort it.

So perhaps forgoing horse riding and other risky endeavours until you have coverage while in the meantime self-insuring? This would leave you exposed to picking up medical costs yourself. I recently fractured my wrist and paid $250 for x-rays, radiologist report, splint and prescription, whereas through my medical insurance my deductible and co-pay would have been well over a thousand had I seen a specialist in-network. Sometimes insurance does not save you money and the only cost that is 100% certain is your premium.
Yep it's more if I get in a traffic accident or whatnot. Or have an illness. I'm healthy and fit but anything can happen, it just makes me hugely uneasy to know that should it, I could be hundreds of thousands of pounds out of pocket.

Simple reason. There is a probation period for new hires, normally 90 days, and until the new employee has passed that probation period, it is time and expensive to place an unknown entity on the healthcare policy.

Pfft. Responsible employers manage this from day 1 so this is just a lame excuse. Thank goodness I worked in an industry where employees generally were valued rather than being left in the lurch like this.

Don't forget that if you are driving your vehicle insurance policy also covers medical expenses. At the end of the day, the hassle of getting short term cover will be worth not having the anxiety if it's that important to you.

Because a USC/PR moving from one job to a new one could use COBRA to continue coverage assuming their previous employer had 20+ employees etc.. or if a new graduate still be on their parents Insurnace till they are 27 or so.

As a new hire on a visa I would either come on a trip for a few days and onboard and then go back to wait till insurance kicks and bring the family over then or have them start it form day 1. If in person / in country is required. Even if it starts day 1 at a large employer it can take a while for it all to get processed.

We should all be thankful for accepting the 'powers that be'. Insurance from day 1 or hire someone else. The trick is to make it so there is no one else.

I think a lot of Americans just accept getting rolled over.
