Apparently some people have found they are actually covered for 90 days

What...!!!!! The state has mandated no short term insurance is allowed !!!! Good grief...... one would have thought that with this situation ALL healthplans for immigrants would start immediately.. Strange decision to make.

Have you looked at buying a regular long term plan on the marketplace, aka Obamacare, and cancelling as soon as your company insurance takes effect. You should be eligible so long as you are a LPR which you seem to be, and having just moved into the state makes you eligible to enroll now versus waiting for the Open Enrollment period. You are allowed to cancel these plans at any time. The cost will likely be between about $400 to $1,000 per month depending upon your age but it would cover you in the interim.

Company don’t seem to think they can early activate the insurance.
My comment was tangential to your actual inquiry. I am quite retired from the practice of immigration law. I avoid giving specific legal advice but will note when those who are giving advice may not be approaching the question in a correct manner.

By way of general comment, there is a dichotomy in the law on classification of non-citizens. All “aliens” are “immigrants” except for specified non-immigrants. B-2 and E-2 are in the group of non-immigrants.

I have no idea what “traveler’s insurance” applies to. (Btw, one large insurance company is named “Travelers.”)

Only you know your risk profile and the likelihood of needing medical attention in the first 30 days. As already mentioned, not having coverage for 30 days should not be a cause of concern if you are healthy and aren’t putting yourself in undue risk. So perhaps forgoing horse riding and other risky endeavours until you have coverage while in the meantime self-insuring? This would leave you exposed to picking up medical costs yourself. I recently fractured my wrist and paid $250 for x-rays, radiologist report, splint and prescription, whereas through my medical insurance my deductible and co-pay would have been well over a thousand had I seen a specialist in-network. Sometimes insurance does not save you money and the only cost that is 100% certain is your premium.

I work with new arrivals all the time. The usual problem I come across is not getting health insurance until the SSN arrives but in this case the company covers the costs.
Kids frequently pick up bugs the minute they go to school, parents are stressed and accident prone so I think glasgow girls solution is good. BUT won't you need ssn for this?

You have two options. You can go to the Marketplace (Obama Care) to purchase a plan, or contact an insurance agent. Even though it’s not currently open enrollment, you qualify because you recently moved here.
You can also contact a health insurance agent to purchase a private plan. If you join a local Facebook group and post your dilemma you’ll have plenty of agents reach out to you.
Since you only need insurance for a month you pretty much need a policy for coverage for accidents and emergencies. If you want to see a doctor during that time for something pretty standard it’ll be cheaper to pay out of pocket or go to a minute clinic. A private plan will take in consideration any pre existing health conditions, the Marketplace will cover you even if a private plan won’t.
I’m a licensed but not practicing health insurance agent. I’ve added a link to the Marketplace (and no I don’t get a kickback lol) https://www.healthsherpa.com/

Be glad your employer doesn't go along with many US employers who do not start non-federal benefits until 90 days after employment starts. That includes healthcare insurance.

Don't know why healthcare plans for immigrants should start immediately. In the majority of cases it doesn't start immediately for US citizens. Why is one favored over the other?

Benefits of being a wanted employee? My waiting period was waived when I changed jobs earlier in the year.

Totally different than waiving waiting periods for immigrants who are new hires.
