Ah... good luck! That doesn't sound so easy.

Wasn't that the intention of the ACA?

Hi,
I called BlueCross BlueShield and although you can subscribe on a monthly basis and cancel at any time, they will only insure from the 1st of Jan 2017. Does anyone know of an insurance company that could fill the gap as we'll be arriving late 2016?
Thanks.

That is incorrect - that is for regular sign-ups. If you have a "lifetime event", such as getting married, changing jobs, or, yes, immigrating to the US, you can sign-up mid-year for (close to) immediate coverage. You will need to prove that you already have coverage - a letter from your GP in the UK should be sufficient.

We had a BlueCross BlueShield policy last year through the Health Marketplace website, to cover some months between jobs. It was no problem cancelling it when we got employment cover, but there was a 14 day notice period that it charged you for. Our notice period ended around the end of a month, give or take a day, so I don't know how it works as regards getting a refund for the part of the month's premium you've already paid; I decided I couldn't take the administrative pain for a reward of about $20.

From memory, I had to cancel the policy through the Health Marketplace rather than BCBS; they then notify the insurer. It all worked seamlessly.
