Wondering if you can help answer a quick question. are brits on a visa entitled to claim unemployment benefit out here?

actually you can. depending on certain criteria.

I think yes here, because in Texas you *pay* for unemployment *insurance* through your paycheque. Check with your state's unemployment / employment office.

If you're on an L1 or H1-B then probably not since if they dumped you you should have left by now.

And you normally have to have had full time job for 6 months before you can claim it...around here at least..

Which taxes aren't you paying?

Unemployment tax in Texas comes out of your paycheque and has nothing to do with SS, Medicare, or federal income taxes. Again, you'd have to check the rules for your state.

Your employer may be forced to pay some on your behalf. Even if you are exempt from federal / state income taxes.

how does that work then? just to satisfy my morbid curiousity.

its kinda seperate to my original question ( of whether unemployment benefits are linked to ss or tax deductions) - but i dont pay any taxs or ss and my empliyer does not deduct any either.

I know you can be exempt from federal income taxes if you're making a pittance, but SS and Medicare have pitifully low ceilings. As for the Great State of California.... dunno.
