I'm sure this guy feels all warm and fuzzy about the "special relationship";

They hung the flag upside down.
I am not really bothered by it, (an easy mistake that many Brits would make), but I like being all accusing about it with people today and what an insult America has given the UK

Re: UK-US special relationship
I met up with a close friend of mine today who has just returned from a four weeks' stay in the USA during which he visited New York City, Boston and San Francisco. He said he enjoyed it more than he expected to but at the same time the cultural differences between the USA and the UK really are very apparent and that the only thing we seem to have in common is the language and even that has its many differences, too.
As for this "Special Relationship" thingy.....it seems to be more like a figment of the imagination of certain politicians, mostly on this side of the ocean as many Britons think that no such bond exists in the minds of the American Establishment, except when they want the UK to grant them certain favours, such as partaking in illegal wars.
The Americans do not view Britain in any kind of "special" light at all - we mean nothing more to them than any other country - quite possibly they regard Germany, for example, as being of more significance and importance than the UK on the global scale.

Out of interest, which politicians? It seems to be more a media thing, but why I am not sure. I can only imagine the politicians that you are thinking are anti-EU, I can not think of another reason to big up the "special relationship" if it is not to give the impression of influence on the world stage, without being involved with Europe.

The Americans?
Lothian dear, when YOU come over and spend some time in the USA yourself, THEN I will be happy to take your observations, currently based on second hand reports, a bit more seriously.

AND at this level of doing things, there is NO excuse for getting it wrong. An explanation, yes. Excuse... No.
