Gawd that's scary! Yeah they checked my registration and insurance.

What if you're taking the test in a rental car? It's not registered to me...wouldn't I need a VA licence to register a car anyway?

I'm not sure about that. Maybe contact a driving school and see if you can pay to use an instructors car?

From the DMV site:

You must take the road skills test if you do not hold a valid driver’s license, and you must provide a vehicle for the test. The vehicle must have a valid safety inspection sticker, license plates, registration card, and working brakes, safety belts, horn, lights, turn signals, mirrors and speedometer.

It doesn't have to be registered to you. For instance, a teenager taking the test is most likely going to be in a car they don't own; someone might use a boy/girlfriend's car.

Yes indeed, the car I used was not registered to me. Just not sure whether a rental one would be allowed though.

And in most places, you rock up with no appointment, give it a try, and if on some outside chance you fail, simply come back the next day and try again! In AZ it cost $10 to test, and that would've covered me for three attempts if they'd been needed, over three days.
As ever state rules vary. Some put limits on how soon you can retry and how often.

Again, state rules vary. Some don't allow rentals.

I just spent the morning in the DMV, didn't have to wait too long since I was there early, passed the computer test but have to wait till road test appointment available so am doing that in 2 weeks time.
Glad at least half of it is done! 😊
Thanks for all the advice guys!

Just check with the rental company that you are allowed to use their car to take a test in. Some won't allow it, even if the state does.

Unless you are me and got confused over the meaning of the word 'pavement'! I for one question too many wrong when I took the test in VA. Fortunately they let you come back the next day and take it again, 2nd time's a charm!
