We do have a similar "table mat" style antenna, which cost us about that, and it works reasonably well for stations with nearby transmitters, which seems to mean about 10-15 miles, or less if there are hills in the way.

With it being digital, you either have sound and a good picture, or nothing, but as you hinted, it is hard to go too far wrong for $20.

I have one although I rarely use it as I have satellite.

It works fairly well. Receives the local affiliates of CBS, NBC, PBS etc. Don't listen to the 300+ channel BS. We're about 60 miles from the main transmitters and get about 25 channels. Some channels are a bit flaky and cut in and out particularly in bad weather. With digital, you don't get a bad picture, it's either excellent HD or nothing.
You also won't get any of the traditional cable channels such as CNN, ESPN, Discovery etc.
