Default UK tax self assessment.

Does anyone here, who is now non-UK resident stiill do their UK self-assessment ? I am still director of our little company back home - we are in a long-winded wind-down - but take no salary or dividends from it.

Hi Steve, strictly per HMRC guidance you are required to file a UK return as a Director of a UK company. However, adopting a pragmatic approach, on the basis that you have no income in the Uk, the Uk company is inactive, you have not received a notice to file a return from HMRC and you have no UK income tax to pay, there is a low risk if you decide not to file a return. To gain complete comfort it may be worth contacting HMRC to let them know. Aman

Thanks Aman,
I HAVE had a notice to file, despite HMRC having my US change of address.
I've decided to file the SA100 with the software recommended by HMRC, hopefully this should be all they need.
(edit) MrsQ was logged into my PC.

Not all company directors are required to send a self assessment - for example those of a company that has been dormant all tax year.

This doesn't sound like OP's situation though.

Yeah, we had a lot of outstanding stock, which we'd intended to sell to one of our agents, but they decided they only wanted to sell it on consignment, and not buy the whole lot. So our company has to stay active until the stock's all gone, which should be this year, then we'll shutter it, and keep the name.

As a non UK resident you should use one of the software products for doing self assessment.

This list gives most of the approved ones.

https://www.gov.uk/software-tax-returns

You can also do a paper filing I believe.
