Right, that is what I was told also when I contacted Careline via telephone. I have a confirmation that they received my mother's passport in September, five days after asking for it. This is ridiculous that there is no other way to contact them when the problem seems to lie at the Embassy in DC, and I reside in Maryland (20 minutes outside of where the Embassy is), and there is nothing more that I can do.

In that case go in person. In another thread when there were the long delays, someone said they did that and were helped. As you are so close nothing to lose by trying.

Ok, if that helps, I'll definitely try that. I was under the impression from the main website that gave me the information about getting my passport in the first place that they wouldn't help me if I showed up there, but at this point, what do I have to lose.

This thread is so helpful because it is the ONLY source that gives you an estimated current timeline on passport information. It should never be closed, just my opinion. :)

I needed a renewal on an expired passport. It has been expired for a little over a year (I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not).

Timeline so far:

-Mailed 16th of November via FedEx standard overnight
-It reached DC on the 17th of Nov.
-My credit card was charged on the 23rd of Nov.

Just waiting and hoping I get it before the 14th of Dec.

Hi All,

My new passport arrived safe and sound yesterday as per the phone call from DHL. I submitted all the paperwork and forms on November 4th and they arrived at the Embassy November 5th. It was roughly 3 weeks total (as when I logged into DHL it looks like my actual passport left the UK on November 25th!)

Its definitely a different looking passport to my old one, but its nice to not have the stress of having to always have the marriage licence on us to prove why my green card is in a different name.

My wife just renewed her passport, it came back yesterday in just about 3.5 weeks.

It does make a difference as I believe you will have to go through the process as though you were applying for a first-time passport. Had it not been expired over a year, it would have been a simple renewal. As such, they will need to verify who you are.

Nope. Makes no difference, in this instance. You only have to apply as a first timer if the passport has expired by 10 years or isn't machine readable and I think the last place to issue those were the embassy in Saudi.

I got a DHL notice today, but the "document" is sent from the Embassy in Washington DC, not the UK. I sent my passport application in Nov 10, fees charged on the VISA Nov 18. Have a bad feeling something went wrong with the application since this DHL delivery is from Washington... anyone notice whether the sender address is in the UK or Washington for the passport delivery?

Or anyone have experience with an application gone wrong, was the notification sent via DHL from Washington or ?

True..now the question is how close to the 10 yr limit before they require you to get a new one...9 yrs and 7 months...etc

The documents you sent with the application are returned from Washington, the passport comes from the UK.

Wow that was quick. I was planning on mailing mine next week. I think the Christmas rush will probably delay it. I wonder if I should wait until after the Holidays...

People who have got their passports in 3.5 week are blessed.

My passport had not expired - but did not have a clear page and I needed to get a visa to travel urgently to Africa.

I took the passport to Washington and submitted the application myself Nov 30. Money was taken on the same day. I told them I needed it urgently, they even flagged it, 'asap'. Officer told me it would be sent that day. I have been calling Careline everyday - yes at 72p per minute- since Dec 9 and the application is not moving. What gets me is that I had to pay $244 for a system that takes nearly four weeks and if I was in the UK I could have got it in a day for less. Why this two tier syststem, especially as it is overnighted by DHL?

I have already had to pay $400 to change my ticket and if it does not come by Monday I am going to have to go to Washington again and pay for an Emergency Travel Document - no not happy at all.

Re: UK Passport timeline

I hear you LayDM. I'm STILL waiting for mine. I called Careline three times..each time I was told that someone from the Embassy in DC would call me back within 1-3 business days. Never heard anything. I emailed ALL of the "complaint department" emails with my entire situation and that I have recieved no help what so ever, and received back what I can only assume are automated responses saying that they basically will not help me, if I want help, I have to call Careline. So, this past Monday, my husband took the day off of work to drive me to the embassy (we are close luckily, but with traffic, etc. it takes forever). I spoke face to face with the person at the counter. First off, they had entered my birth date incorrectly. Then he said that the last movement on my case was a request for more information. Well, that was sent to them (with confirmation of delivery) back in September, directly to the passport examiner's attention. So, he took down my information and said he would call me back that, worse case by the next day. It's now Thursday and I have yet to hear anything. Not only have I not received the passport that I applied for four months ago, they also have my birth certificate and my mother's canceled passport that have yet to be returned. It is absolutely ridiculous to me that there is no other way to get help from anybody without calling an international phone number, being charged for the call, to tell you that the problem resides in another country...but you can't contact anyone in that country. Sorry for the rant, but this has me beyond infuriated, frustrated, and stressed. I do hope you get yours soon.

Please feel free to rant - 4 months - and no one has had the decency to call or write, it is ridiculus. They said they were going to call me on Wednesday -nothing. I just called Careline AGAIN and they said it has moved to the examining stage but it won't be with me until the end of the month and maybe after Christmas with the holidays grrrrr. This is my third passport I really don't know what the problem is. I should have left on Tuesday, I have to travel next week and so it looks like another trip to Washington - 4 hours away plus $153 for the Emergency passport plus petrol. I have already written to my MP and when I get back I will have him make a formal complaint to the Foreign Office. It really is not good enough.
