I created the passport photo myself and got it printed at Walmart. I sent a 6x4 inch standard photo containing four UK sized passport images and two US sized images (just for the hell of it, since I had space). I used their guidelines to ensure the photo fit the template supplied.

Reporting from the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean... My wife and I have just renewed our UK passports. I can't recall the exact time it took, but it was all done and dusted within a month. Hers was delayed a little because the colour photocopy of her Cayman Drivers' Licence that she sent (with "proof" of our street address on a government document) was of the expired Licence, not the current one. They emailed us and we had to courier it across. That's a silly requirement of theirs, because we don't have street mail-delivery here. The Licence is the only document that has our street address on it. We supplied the address, and nobody has ever checked it. Go figure!

Is it ok to send regular US sized passport photos to the place in Durham? I've been reading conflicting information.

Not yet, I was hoping the payment being taken was a good sign also.

The payment is taken before anything else and is non-refundable even if you're not eligible. It does mean that your application has arrived and gone onto the system though.
