Nah - cant find any hits.

I've just applied for a duplicate anyway - just in case. Then I don't really care if they take it from me or not.

OK.

Here it states that you must surrender an out-of-state license when receiving a GA license.

But there's a link at the top of the page saying:

Click here if you are not a US Citizen

...and that makes no mention of surrendering any license.

No, no, not at all.

It's just that somehow I thought you were moving to FL, and searched their site.

Hell, I'm in TX, so I don't have the right to pass judgment on ANY state in the union!!!

I spoke too soon.

It clearly states HERE that you must surrender all foreign drivers licenses.

I take it back, GA is clearly full of paranoid xenophobic hicks in bureaucratic positions. FFS don't wear a turban when you go to the DMV!

So yeah, get yourself a duplicate license from the UK. The Georgia DMV may have no legal right whatsoever to take your UK license away, but they're damn well going to do it anyway, boy!

Oh so it does! Glad I ordered that replacement license then

I think I'll ask them what they intend on doing with it, and if they are going to destroy it - i'd like them to do it in front of me

Personally, spare or not, I'd show up without it (or at least with it in another pocket) and not volunteer it in the first place. Pisses me off, the idea that they think they have a right to confiscate another nation's official documents like that.

Don't offer to hand it over. If they insist tell them it's the property of Her Majesty's Government. Last year the cruise company we were travelling with insisted on collecting passports before departure...they were to be given back at the end of the cruise. I refused...told them they had no authority to take my British passport it belonged to the Crown.

BTW we're in New Jersey and we didn't hand ours in...although we did read somewhere we were supposed to.

Interesting thread. When I moved to the UK fom Australia I had to send my Victorian licence to the DVLA and apparantly they send it back to the issuing authority to have it cancelled. I imagine they do a similar thing in GA? i.e. they send it back to the DVLA.
