Just to let you know; your adult kids (born outside the UK) are entitled to British citizenship.

However, if they have children (ie. your grandchildren) who were born outside the UK they won't be eligible for British citizenship, they would have to be born in the UK to get it.

As others have said, it sounds like your kids are UK citizens already and always were.

If they are UK citizens, then they don't need to apply for UK citizenship (as they already have it). They simply need to apply for the UK passports that they are already entitled to. You don't need to waste time/money on a lawyer or anyone else.

A nit pick...whether the parent has proof or not is irrelevant to the citizenship status of the children. The children were either British citizens at birth or they weren't. The existence or absence of proof of parental citizenship doesn't affect the children's citizenship - it just affects their abilty to prove their citizenship.
