Tx driving test in a rental
Hi all, just moved to Houston from good ol' blighty, was expecting better weather than there has been here's hoping it's on the up!
Has anyone here taken their Tx driving test in a rental car (Hertz in my case)? Seem to find differing answers depending on who I speak to at the office... The Hertz website says you can't but just curious if anyone has tried this and either been allowed to do it or denied. I've done some searching on the threads but haven't managed to find any recent threads on peoples experiences For background, I was born in the US but have lived all my life in the UK (bar 9 months) but do now hold a US PP and SSN. Any advice greatly appreciated. Chris |

Sorry - no idea about the test - seem to remember reading somewhere that you need a letter from the hire car company authorizing you to take the test in their car. We bought our cars before taking tests so wasn't a problem. Seemed silly buying cars and driving them to the test center 30 mins away to take a driving test - especially as I failed first time and then drove home  |
Re: Tx driving test in a rental
Hi,
Yes i took mine November 2009 in an enterprise chevy cobalt. You have to get the full insurance coverage from enterprise and show the rental agreement (with insurance selected) to the instructor when you take the test. From what i remember i had the car all fully insured for 3 days at $70 a day and i passed on the 3rd day and took it back. Good luck! Richard |

Re: Tx driving test in a rental
Took my test in Phoenix in an Intrepid hired from Hertz. I just showed the tester whatever paperwork I had in the car at the time and took the test. I didn't involve Hertz at all.

Re: Tx driving test in a rental
Thanks all, think I may just give it a shot and see what they say.
Only problem may be I don't have much paperwork for the rental - I'm a Hertz #1 Gold member (through my company) and so just basically get a folded slip of paper which is the contract. No signatures, big stacks of important looking information or anything like that! |
Re: Tx driving test in a rental
I did my test in Fort Worth, TX in a Hertz car. Just handed the tester the pile of rental paper work. She took a glance and off we went.
Passed just fine, thought she didn't like the way I flew up to stop signs :o |

Granted but we did have Hertz in common and I'm sure it was 100% more useful to the OP than your post. :)
- Has anyone done a Tx driving test in a rental - Has anyone done a driving test in a Hert rental :D Obviously answering yes to both is a bonus! Hoping to do this within a week. Trying to buy a company car but can't as insurers won't insure me without a Tx driving license (as I'm a permanent US resident). |
Re: Tx driving test in a rental
The way I heard it (and this is 100% based on word of mouth) is that the Hertz paperwork doesn't say you can take a test. But it also doesn't say you can't.
When I did, I just handed them all the paperwork and said it was a rental. The tester glanced through it and said "let's go". |
Re: Tx driving test in a rental
If you look at Hertz website and do a search for test it says you cannot take test in a Hertz rental - although what the drivers test office don't know won;t hurt them ?
Bink do you have a colleague that would let you use their car ? |

I'm aware of the Hertz website saying you can't do it, just wondering if that's them trying to put people off or if you actually can't do it! ;) I was hoping to get a company car and get insured under my UK license intially, then take my driving test in that as I would be named on the insurance policy. Insurance company will only insure me on a Tx driving license though as I have a US PP and I'm resident here now. |

Re: Tx driving test in a rental
We are in Austin and my husband took his test in a rental when we came here in 2005. About the weather - like someone said earlier - come the summer you will be wishing for the so called Texas winter. We thought the same thing when we got here in Feb 05, I remember thinking it was colder than I expected, but those summers are just too long..............................
