From what I've seen around here, you, your partner and adopted tribe of Mexicans can live in a one bedroom apartment without recourse!

Re: Two people in a one bedroom apartment
There are laws somewhat like this but they generally apply to 'group houses' in which no more than say 8 unrelated people can live in the same house, or can live in a house with X bedrooms per person, etc.
In many college towns, this is used to keep down the number of 'party houses' that pop up. It has also been used recently in many suburban areas against many Latin American immigrants, who (as the stereotype goes) often crowd a few dozen into a house built for four or five. Finally, there are still some laws prohibiting more than 8 women unrelated living in certain houses (more than that and it is considered a bordello--I kid you not).
But by and large, laws like this are not enforced unless there is a complaint. They are generally part of the local area zoning regulations, which vary from city to city (and sometimes from neighborhood to neighborhood).
You'll hear some pretty wild things about people from England (just wait until your fifth joke in three days about 'big gnarly teeth'). You'll start to realized that most of the people in the US are pretty uninformed about the UK. Sadly, it also goes for many in the UK about the US, so take a lot of what you are hearing now with a grain of salt and see it with your own eyes when you get here.
