Default Turkey Ban????

I think I've just been misinformed.

I've been told that there is a turkey ban in the UK. That is that US turkeys are banned from entering.

Seriously though, someone has told me that the UK have said that US turkeys will not be allowed through customs. If you declare them they will confiscate them with stiffer penalties for smuggling them in. They have apparently increased the number of sniffer dogs too.

I've looked on BBC News and I can't find anythuing about this.

I feel like a turkey for asking but should I tell my source to get stuffed??

when you say "us turkeys", I take it you are speaking as the royal "we" - please don't include me in that sweeping generalisation!

Not sure. Apparently the turkey needs to be kosher. Antisemitic I think.

Maybe US turkeys like so much US poultry contains antibiotics and hormones that may be banned in the UK and throughout the EU.

Reasoned response. Still can't find anything on the net about it.

Maybe it's really simple. UK customs at POEs probably do not allow meat to be imported into the UK unless it's been approved by the relevant UK government dept. (I think it's changed its name in the last couple of years. It's the UK qv. of the FDA).

So, smuggling it in luggage is a no no. Kind of like the bushmeat that's confiscated from passengers arriving from Africa I guess.

In addition, meat and poultry, and most of their by-products including bacon, ham, sausages, pate, eggs, milk and cream are illegal to import. However, you are allowed 1kg of meat per person from non-EU countries as long as it is fully cooked and in airtight containers

Oh absolutely, some of those there US turkeys might have recently ate some GM foods and guzzled down some urine quality beer and have that strange propensity to die by drowning by looking up at the sky when its raining!

Well this is a relief, I can be safe back in Brum at Christmas knowing that the nasty stuff they call bacon over here is 5000 odd miles away
