It seems an odd and meaningless thing to do. Isn’t the United States the epicentre of the pandemic? And likely to get even worse, with many states (including large, populous states like Florida) relaxing, or soon to relax, shutdowns and social restrictions. Anyway, I thought the only travelers who were currently entering the US were US citizens and permanent residents?

In other words, this is probably just another of President Trump’s distractive actions & comments, to try to prevent observers noticing that the US federal government is making a complete and utter pigs ear of attempting to run the country. Sad.

He is surely planning to revoke/cancel all the H1B and L E2 Australian visas for instance and give those jobs to americans. A stance which will free up given that they say it is 6 years h1b to a green card with 65k visas per year so about 400k jobs on the H1B issue alone.

And fwiw my son knows people who scammed the h1b and got jobs as soccer bar manager and pet store manager in new york even managing to get the green card out through fudging the job checking thing they do they basically said you had to be english to manage an english soccer bar. So maybe the H1B does need to tightened up on certain respects.

Trump is giving people something to vote on.

Leaving aside the inaccuracies in that statement, why do you think he'll be revoking visas as well? He's said he'll stop immigration 'in to' the US, nothing about the people already there on valid visas. Speculation like that isn't helpful to the many forum members already working and living in the US on those visas, do you have another source other than Trump's tweet?

And? Those are perfectly legitimate uses of the visa, there's no requirement to be a brain surgeon for it, a managerial job would qualify as long the person had the requisite experience and a sponsor prepared to go through the application for them.

Oh my .. I wonder how this will affect those with a current visa (CR-1 in my case) that have not entered USA yet?

But the president’s late-night announcement on Monday signals his most wide-ranging attempt yet to seal the country off from the rest of the world. A formal order temporarily barring the provision of new green cards and work visas could come as early as the next few days, according to several people familiar with the plan.

Under such an executive order, the Trump administration would no longer approve any applications from foreigners to live and work in the United States for an undetermined period of time, effectively shutting down the legal immigration system in the same way the president has long advocated closing the borders to illegal immigration.

Persons outside of the USA right now on name the visa will not be able to return under the travel ban. This provision now probably leads to the loss of their jobs?. It also seems like this is saying we are NOT processing this year's H1B lottery upon which you start to work in October or November after the lottery closes end of April isn't it? It also sounds like they are saying we are NOT new issuing new L, E Australian, Employment based green card etc etc which will lead to the revoking of those offers of employment to foreign nationals and ergo the hiring of Americans?

If that is the case then surely revoking name the visa outright would be the next logical step and go a good way towards reversing to a certain extent the drop in the employment. Assume my figures for H1B are accurate that is nearly 400k jobs created for Americans.

I googled it a bit more to get a green card from H1B you have do the labor certification and advertise the job for a period of time and show no qualified americans are available to do the job?. And don't you have to forward the CV of applicants to the INS whatever they call it these days. It didn't say you did but they would want to see the applicants wouldn't they and upon what basis you rejected them? You really want to tell me that in new york city no qualified american was available to manage a bar/restaurant on 3rd avenue who has a reasonable knowledge of premiership/european/mls soccer and experience of managing staff? Or even that no qualified american applied for that job. I find that very hard to believe.

No visas that require an interview are being issued anyway. Consulates and Embassy have suspended face to face interviews.

Not directly, but my US Citizen girlfriend is a voter and she's pretty worried about whether or not I'll be able to stay in the country now.

I received an RFE last week for my L-1B extension, so it's anyone's guess at this point as to what the scope and impact of this will be.

Perhaps it will only apply to admissions at the border and the issuance of new visas (which is already effectively suspended), but who knows if USCIS will be directed to halt processing of any petitions that are already pending?

You can believe what you want, but none of us here have had any sight of the PERM application or knowledge of how the job description was physically worded.

I can actually see how an in-depth knowledge of British culture and of British football could be a genuine requirement to manage a British soccer bar, but those are also the sort of applications that tend to get heavily scrutinized since cultural requirements can easily be abused to unlawfully exclude qualified US workers.

However without seeing the job description or the justification used to disqualify any US workers, it's impossible to say with any certainty.

It would appear it does not affect you at all. Get yourself and your wife on a plane to the US asap so that your visa does not expire and you are locked in as a legal permanent resident. You can always return to the UK to finalize things when the virus has flattened and life resembles something close to what we knew.
