Default Trucks & Debris Fields

Today I was driving down I-40 and got blasted by construction crap (bits of brick and rocks) being carried in a semi-trailer. Cars were swerving everywhere as this thing roared past spewing out debris.

I got the license plate and made a police statement. They weren't willing to pursue it, although they did do a report in case I wanted to do an insurance claim, which I don't. So my windshield is ruined, obviously. There are lots of impact marks in it, and one is a golf-ball sized crater. The bonnet is a mess and one of the fog lights is smashed. Total damage is about $1,100.

Anyone know if there's anything I can do about this in terms of chasing down these cowboys, since I have their license number? I'm assuming it's a lost cause, but it's infuriating!

Did he have one of those "How's my driving?" phone numbers listed on the back?

Do you recall any words or part of the name of the company who owned the vehicle?

If you do, you could write to that company and copy the local newspaper because your story would be of interest to the general public.

I'm sure if you have the plate you can track them down and then sue them

check the local DMV?

You can take his firm to court. Even if he had one of those 'Not responsible for broken windshields' signs, he can still be held liable for negligence.

depends on the state...but in maine, anything over $1000 damage involving a motor the police have to investigate it...

Thanks for the responses.

The only think on the trailer that I was able to take down was the license plate. I can go back to the police if I get estimates showing it's over $1,000 of damage, so I think that is what I'll do at this point and see if they can track this person down for me.

I found out that it's not at all easy to get the DMV to release records to private individuals...

...grrr.
