This will be a rare event that far north. The last time that major damage occurred that far north was Hurricane Agnes in 1972 and this one appears to be bigger.

You don't "tell" immigration anything - you answer the specific questions that they ask you - truthfully - and that's it.

I.e. I am a little worried with saying I am working on getting a visa, and am just coming to have a look where I might want to live...
If that is the reason why you are visiting then why would you be worried about saying that if they ask you?

"Gloria [1985] became the strongest recorded hurricane to strike the U.S. East Coast so far north, a distinction it still holds."

If you look at the path of Gloria, it's uncannily similar to the path and projected path of Irene, right from their formation near the Cape Verde Islands.

I guess you are right. Although Gloria was bigger, there wasn't much damage in the north other than power outages whereas the flooding and loss of life in Pennsylvania from Agnes was considered a very rare major event.

I guess it has all to do with whether there is a high or low tide.

I don't remember much about Gloria besides losing power because of branches coming down-- since then the utility companies have become much more conscientious about trimming back trees around the power lines.

Agnes was highly unusual in that it was formed in the Gulf, crossed into the Atlantic, and then came back onto the mainland again further north where most of the deaths/damage occurred.

Roads to the coast are being closed so that traffic leaving can use all lanes. Hopefully Irene will head out to sea but those in the know say that's not going to happen.

I'm sorry mother nature is disrupting your plans...but spare a thought for those of us living in Irene's path.
Fortunately the damage done by Irene wasn't as bad as predicted. The NY Metro area major airports have re-opened this morning. Hopefully your trip to NJ can now go as planned.
