You will probably not get what you want, which is a new admission to Canada, correct?

I encourage you to do a LOT more research before you get on that bus. you could be stuck between countries and no way to pay your way home (UK).

Hi Kaq, very possible. I've done it several times - both ways. If you are heading to the US as a british visitor in Canada, you need to take along your ticket to show that you will be returning to the UK via Canada. You must have a purpose - where are you going? For how long? Why are you going there? Do you have friends there? With your return ticket you are fine. Good Luck.

Have your return ticket home to the UK to show Immigration that you have every intention of leaving.

I think you have to pay $10 each to enter the USA and they will cross-question you, but, as others have said, if you can show a return ticket to the UK from Canada you have a good chance of being admitted to the US and also admitted back into Canada.
I live in the US near the border, and several times over the years, friends & relatives have flown into Montreal or Ottawa to visit for a week or two and I've picked them up and crossed the frontier with them, so it works.
