We often found the websites are no good - they'll turn you down, BUT if you speak to a live human being, then things can be different.

Don't speak to a non-live (dead?) human being. That would just be pointless.

And a little bit weird!

We require 6 month long stay cover. Former GoWalkAbout customer (good cover), but once hubs hit 71 they couldn't cover him any longer. Last Nov to May trip we got cover, including pre-existing, with AA Travel Insurance for circa £1260 for the two of us. We did get £203 in cash back for going via Quidco but it seems the AA are no longer offering Travel Ins via Quidco. This winter's trip is coming out around £1700 as hubs is due wrist replacement due to arthritis mid June. Personally £1700 (£9.44 a day) is good for the two of us.

OK - an update!

I just visited by outlaws to make sure what they got was what they need.

They got insurance for a list of multiple conditions, many physical in nature, and one that is psychological in nature. One is 76yrs old, the other is 80.

They arranged it by talking to a human being.

It's for 6 weeks cover in the US.

They have all the necessary cover, including repatriation, and upto $15 MILLION cover, from a company called All Clear Insurance:

"AllClear Insurance Services Limited, registered in England No. 4255112. Registered Office: AllClear House, 1 Redwing Court, Ashton Road, Romford, RM3 8QQ.
Authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority firm reference number 311244. AllClear is a registered trade mark."

This company insured my mother, age 75 and UK resident, for a three week USA visit for 112 quid plus an additional 10 quid for a (minor) pre-existing condition.
Flexicover | Travel Insurance | UK Travel Insurance Specialist
The "standard" cover includes
- 10M for medical
- 2M for liability
There are exclusions for things like winter sports (unless <66 years)

Upto age 80 getting insurance is pretty easy, it certainly was never an issue for my mother; it barely warranted mentioning.

After your eightieth birthday, getting insurance is a whole other matter!

I thought BUPA did it for lengthy periods but anyway if they don't, your local State Blue Cross should offer travel insurance. In Canada, Ontario Blue Cross does travel insurance for people out-of-country, there surely must be an equivalent in the US.
