I have a visa for 3 years.. But would ideally like something for the first few months then after that and once we are in the US and can ask around, we can look in to a more permanent option.
I'm mostly concerned in covering our first 3 months in the country.

So you are not getting employers insurance cover?

If that is the case then you can apply for Obamacare on :

https://www.healthcare.gov/

You may as well apply here as soon as you enter the US - it's probably still the best coverage if you are not covered by an employer plan.

No I won't receive employers insurance cover as I will be working for a small boutique-sized company.

What "special life change" or "special enrolment period" would I be eligible for in that case?

It directs me to http://nystateofhealth.ny.gov/ but I get an Access Denied page. Can this only be accessed from a NY address/location?

Being a new immigrant or being on a work visa is a qualifier for a special enrollment period.

I have clicked on https://nystateofhealth.ny.gov/ and am able to access it.

Hope you took into account the cost of health insurance when you took on this job.
