Travel between filing I-751 and getting final green card?!?!

Is the letter from the INS stating that my alien card is extended 1 year (employment & travel authorized) good enough for travling (with my passport and expired green card?). Any other documents I need to bring?
Need to know as we are travling to Russia to adopt a baby beginning of March.
