I am going nuts!!! I have tried to call the Vermont Service center for days. I finally got into the waiting line today! They said the wait might be more than 10 minutes, well, it's been freaking two hours!!!! I am still on the phone!
I was searching around as I waited, glad I found this site.
I filed my I751 in September and received a letter from INS shortly afterwards. It said my travel and employment priviliges had been extended one year. Is this letter good enough in itself for travel? (in addition to my Norwegian passport and old expired green card-dec01)?
We are traveling to Russia to adopt a baby beginning of March-so I really need to know!

~Who is more hopeful I can get help here than in this phone line (they probably won't even know the answer IF I ever get through!)

Yes. Bring the I-797 and your expired green card and you should have no problems at all. The I-797 extends your green card for one year with all the rights and privileges intact.
