Default Transporting reptiles

Does anyone have any experience of bringing pet reptiles into the US? I understand that as they don't need quarantining and we aren't bringing them in to sell, we just need a permit. I'm also worried about the physical transportation of them, as well as the pros and cons of transporting their fragile glass habitats, versus temporarily housing them in unsuitable plastic terraria until we find a stockist of more adequate ones!

We have two indoor tortoises (they go outside when the weather is nice enough), three geckos and a Rankins dragon (like a small bearded dragon).

Have you checked to see if any of the species you have are on CITIES, listed as endangered? If any of them are, that will add to some red tape, and could possibly prevent them from being imported into the US even as a pet if they are protected.

Before you go any further check with the Game and Inland Fisheries dept of the state you are re-locating to to see if keeping tortoises is legal. In Virginia it is not.

Yeah, it's weird what some states will allow or not.

In MA, you can own a croc/gator up to 6', a 20'/300 pound snake, but you can't own a skunk, which you can in other states

As to the OP, no idea...but you can get the habitats for not bad money, pretty much everywhere over here so that really wouldn't be a problem and probably cheaper to use a temporary plastic tub till they get here.

Just because I am curious and cannot find anything regarding this, do you have a link regarding it being illegal to have tortoises in Virginia?

If you go to Virginia Game and Inland fisheries and dig around there you will find a section which allows 5 of a non endagered species to be kept for 30 days and then released at the point of capture. The rules are vague as it implies you can keep alligators but the rule is for exhibition purposes only (we researched allgator farming years ago). I think if you adopt a rescued reptile the shetler retains ownership unlike say adopted burros and horses where the state gives you a title for the animal. The basic concept in Virginia seems to be if it is wild it can not be kept as a pet.
