Default transferring monies from usa to uk...help

I have gone though hifx.co.uk (used to be advertised on here) and wanted to transfer money from my captial one bank (usa) to my barclays account (uk). Today when i tried to send the money from capital one to the bank details given by HiFx, i was told (by capital one bank) that i can only transfer funds within the USA and they don't do international transfers. They said that HiFx would have to initiate the transfer to them (HiFx dont). Therefore, i now have to pay a fee to HiFx because the transfer didn't go though, and i would like to know how everyone else transfers money from usa to uk through a 3rd party, recommendations please...

USA in banking terms is way behind UK...

I've used XE to transfer money from the US (Chase) to the UK (First Direct) successfully. XE use a factor called Custom House who have a US and UK presence, so you basically transfer money to Custom House's US bank account and they transfer it from their UK a/c to yours.

I had a little trouble setting up the transfer as the routing number I had from Chase wasn't acceptable to XE/Custom House, but eventually I was able to set up an online transfer profile to Custom House US. Initially it was put on hold by Chase's fraud prevention people (who are very on-the-ball) but after talking to them and explaining what I was trying to do, they removed the hold and it all worked nicely.

I used to use Currency Online - now I use Xoom.

It's quick and although they probably make it up on the exchange rates used I don't have to pay $15 over here to transfer the cash to the providers account and then pay a fee in the UK (Barclays) when I recieve it over there.

There is still a $5 fee - but then I paid that with Currency Online.

Most use XE for large sums or regular sums. Xoom for smaller sums.

I have used it but it's very slow compared to the likes of XE and it wasn't as cheap.

Interesting - any idea why? I'm sending about $2k back to the UK each month.

XE? If you're doing regular payments, say monthly, you can negotiate a fixed exchange rate, which at least gives you a set and steady figure to deal with.

Also they tend to give better rates, especially if you're doing decent sums of money. Depending on how you do the transfers, you might also not have a fee either if going with the slower option.

Xoom is quick though, aimed at small sums, and a set fee. It's great if you need to give someone a gift, or have a urgent payment kind of deal.

I have recommended Moneycorp to all of my clients for several years. I have a mortgage company in Florida and many of our borrowers are in the UK and transfer large sums for deposits and then ongoing for payments. I would definitely recommend contacting them as I have only ever had positive feedback. www.moneycorp.com/usa is their website and they have a US team that my clients work directly with.

Laura, is the bank account that "we" would have to send the dollars too still in the UK? I believe it was when I looked into it and that would cost me a $35 bank charge to transfer dollars instead of $10 when I sent dollars to a USA based account when I used Currency Online

Hi,

Yes our USD account is still held in the UK at present. However, we are looking into setting up a USD settlement account so I can keep you posted on this.

Either way, the rate saving will compensate for the international wire and as BritishExpats members you do get free transfers. I would be happy to quote you a rate so you can see the savings. Call us free on 877 252 8232.

Ian,

My mistake - just jumped into this but I thought that as we support BritishExpats by paying I was able to at least say who I work for to show I was an expert.

Apologies!
