The exchange rate is hardly worth losing sleep over unless your sending huge amounts of cash, I have tried all of these exchange sites including Xe.com

Xoom.com get my money hassle free into my UK account almost instantaneously!

Xoom Exchange rate --- 1 USD = 0.6657 GBP --- $1000 = GBP 665.73
Xe.com Exchange Rate --- 1 USD = 0.6842 GBP --- $1000 = GBP 684.14
Transferwise --- 1 USD = 0.6841 GBP --- $1000 = GBP 677.33

These are USD->GBP rates? ..... But the extra £19 using xe.com over xoom.com, is free money (unless there are additional charges). I'd take a different choice to save rather less than £19 unless there was some other factor at stake.

Many people would regard an $18 difference on $1000 as significant (XE.com vs Xoom). But again it is meaningless without comparing the charges also.

I think the OP was originally asking about USD to GBP.

Might be a daft question but do you have to declare to HMRC any cash coming back to the UK? Just thinking in terms of bills mortgage etc.?

No. You only declare income for tax purposes. Moving money between accounts, even in different countries, is not "income".
