Default Trans-Atlantic Freighter/Passenger Service

Anyone done one of these? Taken to the high-seas on a freighter to cross the Atlantic?

Maybe you know someone who travels as a passenger on a freighter?

I am thinking of taking a freighter out of Baltimore to a UK port, would appreciate any positive or negative comments about such trips. tia

I haven't done it personally, but I guess if you would prefer peace and quiet to the hubbub of a cruise ship (and there is only the Cunard Line across the Atlantic) then a freighter is the only alternative. It's definitely more expensive than flying across the pond, but it would be an interesting adventure if you have the time to do it, or really can't stand flying.

Freighters also leave from the Elizabeth port in New Jersey (very close to New York City). I often see new imported cars being brought in off the ships. The seaport is only a mile or two from Newark airport, but I don't know if they go to UK ports such as Liverpool, Southampton, Harwich etc.

I found some good links on this excellent website (http://www.seat61.com):

Thanks for the info Englishmum. I don't know, but traveling as a passenger on a freighter seems such a cool thing go do! Armed with a laptop and piles of work I would "work my passage". Someone told me the beer is real cheap! Pity I just love drinking the traditional cuppa.

I got a fancy in my head about doing this. It was hideously expensive though.

Make sure you avoid tankers then....after Exxon Valdez, they're all either dry, or have severely restricted daily consumption - like 1 can per person or suchlike! Maybe that wouldn't apply for a passenger, but I'd check it out first if I were you!!
