Default Toronto - POE - Do they have US immigration in Toronto airport?

Hi

We're moving over to the St Louis in November and I'm just firming up the dates to book flights.

So far I've been focussed on United or American via Chicago as the POE which is straightforward.

However, I now have an option to use Air Canada to St Louis via Toronto and wondering where my POE would be as STL is not an international USA hub? I guess there must be USA immigration facilities in Toronto?

Has anyone been through Toronto and done their POE there?

Toronto is in Canada....it has jack squat to do with the USA. It would be comparable to the French having a POE at Heathrow.

Go with Chicago.

Spoken with great confidence, but actually there is US immigration pre-clearance at Toronto and around 7 other Canadian airports.

Thanks JAJ - Do you know if they can process me in the same way as a US POE would?

At airports it's referred to as Pre-Flight Inspection (PFI). Yes, Pearson in Toronto does it. Allow a lot of time.

Thanks Ian - on both counts!

Thanks also ABY - its been a long haul - be glad when we are there but shed loads of stuff to do still!

Penguin - I've been through US Immigration in Dublin before - don't know about Shannon though.

Haven't been through a POE as an 'immigrant' before so I didn't know if they could process me, hence the question.

Perhaps they'll ask me geography questions - at least I know that Toronto is in Canada now, if I didn't know before, mmmm flying Air Canada, might have guesssed, if I didn't know, which I did - sorry couldn't resist!

Dublin now too.
We passed through US immigration in Toronto a couple of years back and then when we got to San Francisco just walked right in like we'd been on a local flight not international.

Well, they do have a POE there, we came through it when we arrived here last year.

It works the same way exactly as if you were arriving in a US airport and then connecting to another city. If you've not done that before you simply pick up your bags, go through US customs and immigration (look for the overhead signs) and as soon as you are through there is a transit belt for you to put your luggage on and you carry on to the terminal which is for US bound flights only.

I would really, really, really urge you to go that way if it's cheap and convenient for you. Air Canada have brand new planes on that route, it was the best transatlantic flight I've been on in recent years.
And you can buy some real maple syrup in the terminal while you're waiting to connect!!

It didn't take us long at all, much quicker than clearing customs in Atlanta (but then I guess most anywhere would be quicker that ATL!)
