Default Topping up SS in prep for Retirement

My H and I are a long way from retirement but I'm a planner and want to make sure we get a decent social security when we retire.

My husband is a PR and I'm in the process of doing my paperwork. But I'm worried that our social security won't be much when we come to take it out. I know in the States the social security isn't meant to be what you live on, however I have heard that it's possible to contribute additional funds to make up for the years you've missed out on paying.

Does anyone have experience of this and how do you go about doing it?

Many thanks everyone!

I don't believe that is possible.

I think your best bet at this point is to become US citizens then vote Dem next year and pray it isn't too late.

You should be able to do this the other way round though - i.e. top up your "stamp", your National Insurance contributions in the UK - assuming of course you believe there'll be anything resembling a state pension in the UK when it comes time to retire.

I am pretty sure you are right because we have been looking to "buy" the wife 3 more years, so she will have 30 years and avoid the windfall deduction, and that doesn't seem possible.

You also may be able to get credit for your UK contributions, and/or claim a partial pension from the UK - depending on the Social Security Agreement.

Make voluntary Class 2 NI contributions to the UK, when you have the full 30 years you get the full state pension. It costs peanuts to make the contributions. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/pdfs/nico/ni38.pdf

If you don't know how many years you've got already then you can get a statement from the Dept. of Work & Pensions.
